Sidetrip: Gay Scene

Browsing through the profiles in G4M, you would surely notice that there are guys who would claim that they are not into the “gay scene”. I am one of them. Is that for real? I could just imagine how the “straight” gays would take that claim. Why would I post a profile in a gay community site if I am not into the scene? I went to Bed once, thrice to Government and sometimes visit movie houses where gays cruise. Am I not into the gay scene?

A few days back, a friend and I passed by Buendia Avenue. “We are at the center of two gay establishments. To your left is Club Bath and to your right is Queer.” He suddenly blurted. “Really?” I asked with interest on my face. He seemed to notice it and asked me if I would like to have a peek at one of them. Why not? I asked myself. I am already here and my friend is very familiar to these places, perhaps I would not look stupid once inside.

“How much are we going to spend?” I asked him. Maybe my friend sensed that my stinginess is surfacing again that he said that he’s going to pay for me. Wow! I would have a glimpse of a new gay setting for free. I am curious. I cannot deny that. Unfortunately, I have hesitations.

“Are they going to ask for identification?” I asked. “Yes. It is for security purposes.” My friend replied. That bothers me. Although I have not gone to these places and are not acquainted to such SOPs, I could not find any validity for requiring clients to present identification in entering these kinds of places. What risk could a client, who just wants to have their rocks off, posts to such a setting? This is ridiculous.

I would have asked my friend too if they’re going to put the ID into their database but I did not. It would not change my decision anyway. Only inadequately secured places ask for security measures. I rationalize. What is there to expect in that place anyway? The only difference is the place. Perhaps others would say that it is more decent than to cruise in movie houses. However, did they know that movie houses are generic, whereas those places have labels? I guess I just don’t like branding.

All of us have preferences. There are places that we are comfortable with and places that make us uneasy. We all prefer the former. I am not comfortable in places where my movements are restraint. Identifications are forms of restraints. Don’t do this because we know you. On the other hand, are you secured that they would not reveal your personal information if you have done nothing wrong?

Club Bath and Queer are gay scenes. If I go to one of these, it would add up to the gay scenes that I have gone to, and then people would say that I am into the scene already.

Gay scene is like saying gay lifestyle. Homosexuals are not always gay. Homosexuals are people who have sexual attractions on the same sex. Gay is a lifestyle. Homosexuals may adopt a gay lifestyle. It is a subculture. A subculture has its own norms, rules, language, institutions, etc. just like the other subcultures of the society. Embracing the lifestyle means being part of the culture.

I go to gay scenes but I am not into the gay scene. It is not my lifestyle. I took part of it but it doesn’t make me part of it. I am a unique individual in a generic culture. I am part of everything.

My friend and I took the next bus having no regrets of not setting our foot in the “gay scene”. On the bus window, I saw that guy still looking. He has been watching us. I have noticed him looking at us while we were standing in front of the stores near the corner of Buendia and Taft. I am familiar with the area. I looked around the bus. There was a guy comfortably sitting at the end of the bus. He was looking at me and my friend too.

Everywhere could be a gay scene.

i tend to look at it on a different perspective.
i think the issue is more with regard on the connotations that we have in the word "gay".
the reason why most "gay" person avoid using it or being associated with it is because of the immediate perception the society has.

Hey I'm in an HIV awareness program now. Can you help us spread the word and help the awareness campaign? Maybe you could use your blog as a medium. We also have a support group and we realized that there are a lot of gay/bisexual people who had unprotected sex with people who turned out to be HIV positive.

hmm... everywhere could be a gay scene. but I think not everywhere is a gay scene because that will cancel it. ;) interesting question though. what really constitutes a gay scene. i was in a gay bar last night with straight friends. i wonder what scene was that. ;)

theTripper said...

@jericho, the key word is "could" so a gay scene could not be everywhere.

what constitute a gay scene? i am only limited to my own experiences so i could not provide u with specifics. however, it is u who defines a scene, gay or not.

as to ur experience inside that gay bar, what do u think? u experienced it so u must have an idea of what it is.

;)

gay scene is everywhere. of course, this is relative. a gay scene to someone may not be a gay scene to another. hence, everywhere may be a non-gay scene even if to someone it is a gay scene.

@trey:
nasaan na ang ibang trips [hypertrip, ecentrip, etc.]? 'just for the trip' entries na lang ang andito.

theTripper said...

@bino. sure. i have an experience that bothers me before. i could probably share it here.

@xxxborgexxx. thanks for dropping by. :)

oo. kita ko na ito ['my other blogs' sidebar] noon. na-disorient lang ako dahil nawala sila sa just for the trip. tsk. okey dokey.

true enough pare. everywhere you or i go is a gay scene...maybe because its you or i that makes the scene gay...ano ba yun...nalilito na ako sa argument ko...hahaha...

but yours is an interesting blog!

theTripper said...

hahaha @dodong. it doesn't always follow that if there's a gay in a place it would always turn to be a gay scene. gay scene would or may equate to gay activity or interaction.

pero pag sinabi mo na kahit saan ka pupunta ay merong bakla, iyun ay talagang hindi imposible. hehehe

I come to ponder what you inputted. "Everywhere could be a gay scene."

If you are gay and you go into that scene, then it could be a gay scene, am I right?

I like your post. I agree with your distinctions about gay and homosexual. But, I believe that gay has become a generic term.

Telling a gay person, homosexual may seem a classification just like telling a white person, a Caucasian. But saying "gay" to a gay person is a labeling, a distinction.

I hope I've made a sense here.

Everywhere could be a gay scene but I don't believe that everywhere is a gay scene.
